Kayak, Clean, and Explore: An Eco-Friendly Adventure!

Hello Internet! It has been a long time since I posted anything, but I have decided to give it a go again and see if I can maintain a consistent schedule. Glad to see you here!

I stumbled upon an activity that combines kayaking, eco-consciousness, and exploration. So grab your paddle and come along!

In this YouTube video, we went on a journey through the canals of Copenhagen in kayaks that we borrowed from the people at GreenKayak. The kayaks are free-of-charge as long as you:

  • Spend your time on the water collecting trash.
  • Share it on social media using the #GreenKayak.

It’s a fun activity you can do with family or friends that allows you to kayak along scenic canals while cleaning up the environment by picking up trash, all while exploring picturesque European cities by water. You can do this in Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Hamburg, Berlin, and now also in Tokyo!

GreenKayak is an environmental NGO that engages volunteers in the fight against environmental pollution while kayaking. In 2021, they had a fleet of 73 GreenKayaks placed across Europe, and they collected around 19 tons of trash.

They acknowledge that this alone won’t solve the issue of plastic pollution in our oceans, but it sheds light on the problem and serves as a visible reminder to others. When people on the shore see you paddling by in the kayak, they are less likely to litter the environment with their trash.

A few tips if you decide to try this out:

  • Check the weather report and dress accordingly.
  • If the water is rough, don’t go too far from the shore. Water streams make the trash accumulate in calm water anyway.
  • Small things like cigarette buds can be tricky to pick up with the grabbing tool, so maybe bring some reusable gloves or a secondhand strainer.

We had a blast while making a positive impact on the local environment. We even had people living in houseboats along the canals, thanking us for keeping the area clean – it was heartwarming.

Do you know of any fantastic initiatives like this in your city? Have you tried other eco-friendly activities in Copenhagen that I should try out? Share your recommendations in the comments below!

See you soon <3
